Baptism symbolizes the new life God gives us as we join the Christian community.

Choosing baptism for your child or for yourself is an important expression of your

relationship with God and with this Christian faith. Through the minister and lay leaders, the congregation seeks to make promises to walk with you and your children before, during, and after the baptism.  In helping you prepare, we feel both blessed by your trust and awareness of the amazing responsibility involved in celebrating God’s infinite love for your children and for you.

We offer baptism to all ages believing the gift of God’s love does not depend on our ability to understand or explain it.

The people of First United Church have a baptism policy which indicates that

  • those seeking baptism (adults or parents of a child) must be a part of the worship life of the congregation.
  • at least one parent or sponsor of a child seeking baptism must be him/herself baptized.
  • the adults or parents of a child seeking baptism must attend a baptism preparation session.

With infant or children baptism, instruction and support are given to parents or sponsors to equip them for the child’s Christian nurture.

Godparents are welcome to be part of the sacrament of baptism and are encouraged to offer ongoing support, encouragement and care in the spiritual life of the individual. They will be contacted by the minister or lay leader for a conversation prior to the baptism service.

The baptism service occurs during a Sunday worship service. During the ceremony, the congregation vows support for the individual or child and family.

We would like to discuss baptism with you further. To begin the process please join us for worship to experience the dynamic love of this community. Contact the office to express your interest and an appointment with the minister will be scheduled.
